How to customize the macOS menu bar (macOS 26 Tahoe)

Updated September 5, 2026

FAQ

Can I customize the menu bar without a third-party app?

Within limits. System Settings › Menu Bar sets auto-hide, the background and which of Apple's items show; Appearance sets Light or Dark and the accent color; Accessibility › Display can make the bar opaque. The bar's own color, its shape and how it behaves per app are not adjustable there.

Is the menu bar transparent in macOS Tahoe?

By default, yes. macOS 26 Tahoe draws no background behind it, so whatever is at the top of the screen shows through. Turn on Show menu bar background in System Settings › Menu Bar to get a bar again.

How do I rearrange or remove menu bar icons?

Hold ⌘ and drag an icon to move it. Apple's own controls have a checkbox each under Menu Bar Controls in System Settings › Menu Bar, and every third-party icon has a switch under Allow in the Menu Bar on the same page; turning one off keeps that icon out for good.

Does Dynamic Menu Bar replace Bartender or Ice?

No. They organize and hide icons; Dynamic Menu Bar changes how the bar itself looks — its color, its shape, the corners of the display and what it does while music plays.
